You are in charge of your life. No one else. Anything that is in your life right now, you have brought to you, the good and the bad. Knowing this simple fact of life, you can start to design your life in such a way that you are the master of your destiny. The second you take full responsibility, you become the CEO of the business that is your life. The buck stops here, right now.

You might be sitting, reading this on your phone right now and wondering how in the world you can do this. Let me show you..

Your Mission Statement

Every business has a mission statement and it’s what drives the direction of their company. This mission statement is based on the core values the company has. It speaks volume about what they believe they could do for the world and how they’re going to do it. What are your core values? What do you want to get done in the limited span of time that you have here on Earth. Perhaps you want to become the best businesswoman, or perhaps become the man who bought the New York Jets, or you want to have such a big impact on people that your funeral will attract droves people from all around the world who you have connected with in one way or another. `Whatever this mission/ purpose is for you, find out and have it the beacon that you strive towards and are passionate about every single day.

Your Brand

Plato once stated a truth that holds true even today, that all humans are inherently diverse so what makes you, you? The fact that there has been -in all of human history- an individual exactly like you is absolutely fascinating. This means that you have something unique to the world that has NEVER been seen before. Perhaps you are an exceptional at relating with others, and so this is your unique selling point. It’s your comparative advantage in the world. As yourself this: What’s the first thing people think when they see you or hear your name

Your Assets

Of course, the most obvious assets are the physical ones starting with the money you have in your wallet but it extends to much more than that. I’m talking about the assets that you can’t see but you use all the time. The first of which is your energy.

Do you find yourself going through your day with sufficient energy or do you find yourself getting tired only midway through your day. If you want to fix this, simply look at what you’re eating, how long you’re sleeping, and how much you’re exercising. Chances are it’s probably one of these three.

Believe it or not, you’re habits are an asset in your life. You invested time and focus in order to create them and implement into your life and now they make up the daily actions that total the results you’re seeing today. When you think about it like that, you can start to evaluate which habits are not serving and hindering your success.

Out of all your assets mentioned, time is your most valuable one because it’s fixed. You only get 24 hours in a day. Whether you’re a CEO of a Fortune 500 Company or a college student, you have the same 24 hours and what you choose to do with those is completely up to you. Although, everyone has the same amount of time, this is where the difference can be seen between the high achievers and the low performers. The high achiever will suck the juice out of the day whereas the low performer will have slots of time wasted on menial tasks that don’t get them anywhere to their big goal.

There is one asset that isn’t talked about often but is very important as well: willpower. There is a very limited amount in your day and as a result you must decide what you want to use it on. Eliminate that decision making fatigue by implementing rituals throughout your day, especially in the morning. A great book to help you with this is Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. You can also do as much preparation as you can for tomorrow the night before so there is no long indecisive moments that will be depleting willpower. Setting a very specific to do lists with measurable goals for the day can be very effective and possibly skyrocket your productivity if you haven’t implemented something like this before.

Your Comparative Advantage

What is your advantage over everybody else? In other words, what are your strengths. If you don’t know, find them and double down on them. Here’s a great resource that I’ve personally used.

Your HRM

Similar to a company’s Human Resource department governing the behavior of the company towards the people in the company, you will have to govern your behavior towards the people in your life. This means your friends (including your network), family, and your relationship with your significant other.

You may have heard that you are the average of your 5 closest friends. Well then you know that being very cautious of who you let into your life can be a very valuable skill and can possibly elevate your success. Simply surrounding yourself with those who are better skilled than you are, you learn through osmosis. Ever notice how you pick up on your friend’s mannerisms aka certain thing they do, you do as well. What if you can pick up on the mannerisms and tendencies of a millionaire? Just think of all the benefits it will bring to your life.

Let’s not forget about your relationship with your significant other. There is no denying that a relationship will require you attention, time, and other personal assets so you have to make a conscious effort to keep your significant other happy or it may just impede your performance and focus in other parts of your life.

A really good book that every man is The Way Of The Superior Man by David Deida which explains the underpinnings and subtle nuances behind relationships. Another good one is The 5 Love Languages which will give you the knowledge to better your relate to your loved one and make them feel understood.

Marketing Yourself

This is how you carry yourself and how you interact with others. This is displayed through a plethora of expressions and gesticulations that you make all the time.

There is not enough words that I could use to emphasize the importance of good body language. It speaks volumes about an individual and it speaks much louder than any word or any scream.

Whether you know it or not, this is very important because we are all salesman and the product we are selling is ourselves.

Since 90% of communication is nonverbal, you should focus on what your body language is saying about you.

Do you maintain strong eye contact? Do you have a firm handshake? Do you project your voice in a manner that is confident and assertive? All these things that may not seem significant are crucial when others are evaluating you especially within seconds of meeting you. Our sub communications to us is like the fishbowl to a fish. The fish can’t see it but everyone outside can. Similarly, we can’t see our body language when we go through our day to day but everyone who we interact with can.

You are the CEO of your life and hopefully this article has shown you just that. Now that you are aware of all these different aspects, you can begin to improve each one and just like building a business, it takes time but the reward of a happy life is definitely worth it.

  1. Very well stated. I’ve never thought of life being like a business….but it truly is. And it’s so true that we are "the average of our 5 closest friends", as stated above. Like attract like….as the saying goes. And when I was determined to change my lifestyle a few years back, what worked for me is setting up reminders and quotes on Post-it notes….and I would have them in random spots where I would see them on a daily basis. It may not work for others, but it helped motivate me to see what my goal was.

  2. As any CEO knows their strengths and weaknesses, and can admit to them, so can a "small" person. Anything they have achieved, so can you. You just need the motivation (for me, it’s family), the drive and the determination. And you can also look at your family dynamics as a business, of sorts. Think of it as you only have this one life….make your mark, do stuff to be remembered by. And pass on that legacy through your children.
